Quakers dropped by John Carroll

John Carroll scored 30 unanswered points to pull away from Wilmington and hand the Quakers a 44-7 setback in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Williams Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Wilmington is now 0-4 in the OAC, 0-5 overall. John Carroll improves to 3-1 in the conference, 3-2 for the season.

John Carroll's multi-dimensional offense made its presence felt early as the Blue Streaks, led by senior quarterback Devin O'Brien, built a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

"John Carroll is a very good offensive football team," Wilmington head coach Ken Minor said. "They have so many weapons. O'Brien is a very good quarterback and every running back they sent out there was very good."

The Quakers climbed back into the game on a 67-yard drive that featured the right arm of quarterback Brandon Arehart (Wilmington) and Wilmington's talented receiver corps. Arehart hit Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington) for an 18-yard pickup and found Kyle Blakeman (Wilmington) twice, including an 11-yard scoring strike. Max Gabbard's (Waynesville) kick cut the Blue Streaks' lead to 14-7 with 7:02 to play in the opening half.

"We felt that if we could get to the half down seven, we would be in good shape," Minor said. "But they dominated the time of possession and were able to get first down after first down. They just sort of broke our will."

Wilmington's momentum was short-lived, thanks to a 66-yard John Carroll drive on the ensuing possession that put the Streaks up, 21-7.

The real dagger was delivered late in the half when John Carroll stopped Wilmington on downs at the JCU 41-yard line and went 59 yards in 1:05 to push the advantage to 28-7 at the half.

The Blue Streaks controlled play in the second half, beginning with a 77-yard scoring drive that took more than 8 minutes off the clock to open the third quarter.

After a first half that provided reason for optimism, the Quakers' offense never got untracked in the second half. Wilmington picked up just three first downs and possessed the ball for less than 8 minutes in the final 30 minutes of play.

Despite spending an abundance of time on the field on a hot autumn afternoon, Wilmington's defense battled to the finish. Cornerback LaVonte' Darby (Cincinnati/Winton Woods) led the Quakers with 11 tackles and two pass break-ups. Freshman safety Devon Burton (Waynesville) continued his solid play with nine stops, two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.

Arehart passed for 188 yards, with Heard making five catches for 68 yards.

The Quakers will travel to Marietta to face the Pioneers 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15. Marietta lost to No. 2 Mount Union, 62-0, Saturday.
