Quakers travel to Heidelberg

Wilmington College will travel to Tiffin to face the Heidelberg University Student Princes in Ohio Athletic Conference action 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The game will be Web cast by Wilmington College Sports Network.

The Quakers (0-6 OAC, 0-7 overall) are coming off one of the most lopsided losses in team history, a 75-0 defeat at the hands of the Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets.

"That felt bad. We were mismatched in all phases of the game. They scored against our defense and our special teams. They scored a defensive touchdown, and we didn't score. That makes this week a very important game for us to play for self-respect," Wilmington head coach Ken Minor said.

Heidelberg (4-2, 5-2) scored 21 fourth-quarter points to post a 42-20 win at Marietta last week. The Berg rolled up 456 rushing yards, 226 from OAC Offensive Player of the Week Germany Woods and 191 from Cartel Brooks.

"They really run the ball well. Woods has been over 100 yards nine of his last 11 games. He is a fantastic runner and Brooks can take it to the house at any time also," Minor said. "The unsung heroes, though, are their offensive linemen. Counting their tight end, they have five of six that are seniors. They have been building that line for years, and it is a good one."

Wilmington quarterback Brandon Arehart (Wilmington) enters Saturday's game ranked sixth in the OAC with 159 passing yards per game. Heidelberg QB Michael Mees has thrown for 175 yards per game.

"Mees is a nice quarterback and he really benefits from their running game," Minor said. "The play-action pass is very deadly in an offense like that. You have to commit defensively to one thing and you know you leave other things open," Minor said.

The game will feature some of the top linebackers in the OAC. Matt McFadden (Sabina/East Clinton) had 14 stops against Baldwin-Wallace and ranks No. 5 in the conference with 9.4 tackles per game. Antwoine Shelton (Dallas, Texas/Duncanville) is eighth with 8.7 stops per game.

"Matt and Antwoine are having outstanding seasons. Matt doesn't get all the accolades that everybody else does, but he is determined and he works hard every play. He's good and he's getting better," Minor said.

Heidelberg linebackers Craig Sykes and Dawson Gore combine for 18 tackles per game. Sykes had six tackles, two quarterback sacks and an interception against Marietta to earn OAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

"Sykes is a good football player," Minor said. "It seems we are seeing conference players of the week every week, and that just shows how good this conference is. You never know where it's going to come from each week."

Minor said the game plan is straight and to the point.

"We need to get better. That's what we talk about every practice and what we will be talking about until the season ends," Minor said. "We need to get a little confidence going, get some small victories and turn those into big ones."
