Weary Quakers fall to UC-Clermont

BATAVIA – Playing their third doubleheader in as many games, the Wilmington College baseball team looked weary in falling to UC-Clermont in a non-conference doubleheader, 7-5 and 12-2, at Brian Wilson Field.

The Fightin' Quakers had an opportunity to claim the first game, but sophomore pinch-hitter Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia) grounded out with bases loaded in the seventh. Sophomore Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) put WC within winning distance with a three-run homerun earlier in the inning. Sophomore Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) started the rally with a one-out double and then senior Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) was hit prior to Cleaver's bomb.

After a groundout, sophomore Max Ramsey (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) reached on an error and sophomore Alec Hutzelman (Centerville, OH/Centerville) singled to put runners on the corners. Freshman Ryan Henning (Milford, OH/Milford) loaded the bases by getting hit. However, the Foster groundout halted the rally, and the game.

Wilmington took the lead in the top of the first on a RBI groundout by Cleaver and a wild pitch that scored Arehart. However, the Cougars countered with two in the bottom of the first. They tacked on two in the third and three in the fourth.

Arehart reached base three times via two walks and a hit batter, and scored twice for the Fightin' Quakers. Cleaver finished with four RBI to lead Wilmington.

Sophomore Cole Voltz (Mt. Sterling, OH/Madison Plains) fell to 1-2 on the season, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. He added a strikeout and a walk.

UC-Clermont took the lead in the nightcap, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. But, WC answered with two in the second.

Arehart opened the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third as Henning reached on an one-out error. Henning stole second, and Arehart scampered home on a throwing error by the catcher. Freshman Luke Matthews (Centerville, OH/Centerville) brought home the tying run on a single.

It didn't remain tied for long as the bottom of the second inning started with back-to-back errors. Once the inning finished, the Cougars had crossed seven runs across the plate – only two of which were earned. UC-Clermont rounded out the scoring with a three-spot in the fourth.

Matthews took the loss (0-1), allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits in one-plus innings of work. Four different players recorded hits in the loss.

Wilmington (3-25) travels to Earlham 4 p.m. Wednesday for its final non-conference game of the season.
