Trail Blazers walk-off with victory

CHILLICOTHE – After racing out to a 5-1 lead, the Wilmington College baseball team fell to Ohio Christian in 10 innings Thursday in non-conference action at Veterans Stadium. It's the second time in four games the Quakers lost in the last at-bat.

Wilmington claimed the lead as freshman Bryce Bean(Lees Creek, OH/East Clinton) scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Freshman Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) recorded an RBI single in the fourth, and then came around to score on an error.

The Trail Blazers got a run back in their half of the fourth inning, but WC tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles by senior Hunter Justus(Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) and freshman Max Ramsey(Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) produced two runs for Wilmington. Unfortunately, the scoring ended right there.

Through four innings, Wilmington ran out three different pitchers – Troy Wagner (Bright, IN/East Central), Reid Wurtz (Lawrenceburg, IN/East Central) and Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia) – with good results. They combined to allow one run on five hits. However, as Wilmington went deeper into the bullpen, the Ohio Christian bats started to come alive.

The first four batters reached to start the fifth inning, and three of them crossed the plate to pull OCU to within one run. The Trail Blazer knotted the game with a single run in the sixth, and then tallied the winning run on a bases loaded single in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Wilmington (3-13) opens Ohio Athletic Conference play 1 p.m. Saturday as the Quakers host Heidelberg at Tewksbury-Delaney Field.
