Spirk has led the Fightin’ Quakers to six NCAA Division III Tournament appearances including five berths in the regional semifinal (“Sweet 16”) round. Six Wilmington teams have claimed regular season conference titles under Spirk’s tutelage including three Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) titles in a span of four years from 2000-03. Spirk has also guided Wilmington to 14 appearances in the OAC Tournament with three titles.

Spirk has led Wilmington through three conferences – the Association of Mideast Colleges (AMC), the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) and the OAC – as well as two years as an independent institution. After a 7-10 record during his first year with the program in 1992, Spirk guided the Quakers to their best four-year run in program history – a 66-13 record from 1993-1996. After the last year as an independent, Spirk won consecutive HCAC titles followed by the run of three OAC titles in the first four years in the conference. His 2003 squad finished the OAC slate with a perfect 9-0 record along with winning the OAC Tournament title.

Spirk’s teams are as good in the classroom as they are on the field. His teams have earned the Women’s Collegiate Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 21 of the past 23 years.

A 1992 Wilmington College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Spirk has earned the respect of his coaching peers, both regionally and across the nation. He was the AMC Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994, the HCAC of the Year in 1999 and the OAC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003. He was named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year and finalist for National Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996.

Spirk is a 1982 graduate of Wilmington and one of the best players in men’s soccer history. A four-time All-American, he is the program leader in career goals (74), career assists (43), career points (191), single-season points (57 and 54) and season goals (22 twice).
