Heavyweights Carry the Day for Wrestling on Day One of Central Region Championships

RESULTS THROUGH DAY ONE

ADRIAN, Michigan - The Wilmington College wrestling team earned victories in the four heaviest weight classes on the first day of the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships hosted by Adrian College on Friday evening.

In the 174-pound weight class, Alex Hobbs defeated Jacbo Williams of Otterbein University via fall (0:43) before losing a major decision to Daniel Devera of John Carroll University in a quarterfinal round match. Hobbs rebounded to pin Carter Layton of Muskingum University in 4:12.
 
In the 184-pound weight class, Skyler Cowgill also opened his tournament with a pin, defeating Jack Minner in 5:38. After an 18-2 technical fall defeat at the hands of Mount St. Joseph University's Antonio McCloud. Cowgill earned his second pin of the day, taking out Thomas Salois of Alma College in 5:32. In the second round of consolation, Adam Medeiros of Heidelberg University won over Cowgill via major decision (13-1).
 
In the 197-pound weight class, Caleb Tackett rebounded from getting pinned in the main round by winning over De'veon Parker of Heidelberg by decision 5-2 and pinning Ohio Wesleyan University's Marquel Hendry in 4:19.
 
In the 285-pound weight class, Shadrach Brausch pinned Garrett O'Connell of the University of Mount Union in 1:49 to open the day, but after a fall (4:56) at the hands of Max Bishop of Wabash College, Brasuch withdrew from competition due to injury.
 
Wilmington had competitors in the 141-pound (Garrett Simmons), 149-pound (Adrian Salamone), 157-pound (Patrick Kelley), and 165-pound (Trey Williams) weight classes, but those individuals were unable to win a match.

Day two of competition begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
