WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's lacrosse team narrowly fell to Trine University 6-5 in the regular season home opener on Wednesday evening. Wilmington will continue its home stretch with hosting Ursuline on Saturday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
Wilmington came out quick offensively in the first 12 minutes of the first half. Kelly Angevine notched two goals, one coming from a free position shot and the other coming on an unassisted athletic play. The Fightin' Quakers were able to tack on another goal with a great pass from Becca Petra and an impressive goal by Rachel Reinhart. The Thunder did not give up being down 3-0 and were able to answer twice before the half ended. The second goal came with just 47 seconds left on a goal from Kristin John.
Trine opened up the second half similar to that of Wilmington's first half. The Thunder were able to score three straight goals in the first 12 minutes of the period. All of the goals came from free position shots in that 12-minute stretch. The Fightin' Quakers were able to answer with an unassisted goal from Petra adding to her point total on the evening. The Quakers were able to cut the lead to one with 9:31 left on the clock. Trine answered back at the 5:10 mark and increased to lead to two goals. Ella Young was able to score with 2:48 left on the clock, but Young's goal proved not enough in the final minutes to overcome the two-goal Thunder lead.
Wilmington's offense was paced by Angevine and Petra for the Quakers, by scoring three goals and one assist on the evening. In goal, Megan Wieloch led the way with 16 saves on 22 shots. Young chipped in with one goal and six ground balls.
Wilmington (0-2) will host Ursuline College on Saturday, March 3 for a matchup against the Arrows. The game will start at 3 p.m.
