Men's Cross Country To Compete in NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Saturday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's cross country team will compete in the 2018 Division III NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Franklin College on Saturday.

The Race: The eight kilometer race will take place at Blue River Cross Country Course in Shelbyville, Indiana and is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m.

The Teams: All NCAA Division III institutions from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan will compete in the meet.

The Coach: Ron Combs is in his 23rd season as head cross country coach at Wilmington College. A 1993 graduate of Wilmington, Combs was a member of the only cross country team to win a conference title in school history. Also the head track & field coach at the College, Combs led the Fightin' Quakers to two top-10 finishes nationally with a sixth place finish at the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships and a seventh place mark at the 2004 Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The Runners: The last eight kilometer race for the Quakers was the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship where freshman Evan Whitaker led the team in 10th place with a time of 26:58.2. Gage Clemens (28:06.6) and Cameron Phelps (28:07.2) were the second and third Quakers to cross the finish line, doing so in 43rd and 44th place respectively. Ryan Honkomp and Jacob Whitaker rounded out the top five for Wilmington, finishing with times of 28:39.5 and 28:44.9.

Recent History: In 2017 Wilmington finished 30th with Ryan Honkomp leading the team with a time of 28:24.9 in 155th place. Cameron Phelps was close behind with a time of 28:42.8 in 167th place.
