Freshman Kyle Short had a career-high three hits as the Wilmington College baseball team dropped its final home game of the season, losing to Ohio Christian – 9-6 – at Tewksbury-Delaney Field in non-conference action.
Wilmington (3-33) ends the season 1 p.m. Saturday with an OAC doubleheader at Marietta.
The Fightin' Quakers took an early lead as junior Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) led off the bottom of the first with a single and promptly stole second. He came around to score on a single by junior Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami).
Cleaver moved to second on a groundout and scored as Short reached on an infield single and a fielding error by the shortstop.
Ohio Christian pulled closer with a run in the second and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
The scored stayed 3-2 until the Trailblazers exploded for six runs in the eighth.
WC struggled for the second day in the row with runners in scoring position, going just 3-for-15. Two of those hits came as Wilmington tallied four runs in the ninth inning.
Freshman Daniel Hayes (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) started by reaching on an error, and then consecutive walks to Walker and Cleaver loaded the bases. Freshman Jake Robinson (Westerville, OH/Central) single home a run, and Short singled home two more. Unfortunately, the momentum ended there as three straight fly outs. The middle of which was a sacrifice fly by senior Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) brought home another tally.
Short was 3-for-5 with two RBI, and junior Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) was 2-for-4 in the loss.
Schrock took the loss (0-2), allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits in seven innings of work with two strikeouts.
