Volleyball opens season with 3-0 loss

DELAWARE – The Wilmington College volleyball team opened the 2014 campaign with a straight set loss (25-21, 25-12, 25-16) to Ohio Wesleyan in the first game of the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Fightin' Quakers tallied three kills in the first set and four kills in the second and third sets.

In the opening set, the two teams battled in a closely contest set. Following back-to-back attack errors, Wilmington had its biggest lead of the match, 11-8. It stayed close throughout, but the Battlin' Bishops tallied seven of the final 11 points to take the set.

Ohio Wesleyan scored 15 of the first 19 points in the second set, and never looked back. They raced out to a similar lead in the third set to secure the match victory.

Junior Tabby Biegler (Columbus, OH/ Briggs) led the Fightin' Quakers with five kills, while junior Ariana Neff (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) finished with five assists and six digs. Junior Emily Oberschlake (West College Corner, IN/Union County) had a team-high 10 digs.

Wilmington (0-1) will play Grove City and Earlham Saturday in the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
