WC wins set, loses match

ADA, OH – The Wilmington College volleyball team won its first set of the Ohio Athletic Conference season, but fell to Ohio Northern, 3-1 (25-8, 25-12, 23-25, 25-5) Tuesday.

Sophomore Ashley Miller (Arcanum, OH/Franklin Monroe) had a kill, then a service ace to give Wilmington the 6-5 lead in the third set. With Miller serving, the lead grew by two more points, and WC didn't trail again for the set.

Ohio Northern pulled to within one, but the Lady Quakers scored five straight points – four of which coming with senior Caity Massie (St. Paris, OH/Graham) serving. Wilmington built its lead to as much as six (19-13) and held on for the 25-23 victory as the Polar Bears made a charge.

Senior Anne Keenan (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) led WC with nine kills, while freshman Ariana Neff (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) had a team-high 17 assists. Sophomore Madi Ray (Loveland, OH/Loveland) recorded a team-high eight digs.

Wilmington (7-18 overall, 0-8 OAC) will wrap up the 2012 season 5 p.m. Saturday at John Carroll.
