Women's Track & Field Opens New Year at Marietta on Saturday

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's track and field team opens the New Year at the Marietta Invitational hosted by Marietta College on Saturday. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m.

The Teams: Wilmington will be joined by Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) members Marietta, Muskingum University and Capital University. Bethany College of West Virginia is the other NCAA Division III institution in attendance.

The Coach: Ron Combs enters his 18th season as the head coach of Wilmington's men's and women's track and field teams. Combs has been named Coach of the Year, twice by the Heartland Athletic Conference, and once by the OAC. In 2002, he led the men's indoor team to a sixth-place finish at NCAA DIII Championships.

Who to Watch: In the first indoor meet of the season, the First Glimpse Meet also at Marietta in December, Katie Hughes won the 5,000-meter run (20:24.23) while Kendra Stahl won the 1,000-meter run (4:02.98). Emma Burke took third place in the 55-meter hurdles as well as a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash. Allison Helmke also took a fourth-place finish in her event, the mile run. The Fightin' Quakers' relay team of Hughes, Burke Helmke and Savannah Rhodes won the distance medley realy with a time of 14:34.24.
