Throwers account for majority of points

GRANVILLE – The Wilmington College women's track and field team scored more than half of its points in two events, and finished third at the Denison Lid Lifter Saturday.

Wilmington's throwers dominated the shot put, earning the top three places, and added a sixth place finish in the event. They added first, fourth and sixth place finishes in the weight throw to account for 45 of the team's 77.5 points.

"Our throwers on the women's side have gotten off to a great start," said Wilmington head coach Ron Combs. "I'm excited to see how good that group can be. I'm excited about our finish for the women. We do not have a very big team. Our women finishing third - not far from second - is a really good result."

Sophomore Lauren Stacy (Bethel, OH/Western Brown) won the weight throw (15.53 meters) and was second in the shot put (12.61 meters). Junior Marissa Bolen (Gibsonburg, OH/Gibsonburg) won the shot put (12.85 meters) and was fourth in the weight throw (13.94). Freshman Megan Darst (Grove City, OH/Grove City) also scored in both events, placing sixth in the shot put (11.35 meters) and seventh in the weight throw (11.88 meters).

Freshman Tara Karnes (Greenfield, OH/McClain) had a career-high distance of 12.03 meters in the shot put.

Senior Sarah Murphy (West Liberty, OH/West Liberty Salem) scored in three events for the Fightin' Quakers. Murphy won the 60 meter hurdles (9.23), was sixth in the high jump (1.42 meters), and was seventh the 400 (1:02.76).

Senior Tricia Steffen earned second-place points in the mile run (5:35.21) and fourth in the 800 run (2:31.73). Sophomore Hannah Rolf (Springfield, OH/Northeastern) added fourth-place points in the pole vault (2.9 meters).

Wilmington returns to action Saturday at the Ohio Athletic Conference South Meet hosted by Marietta College.
