Women fifth after day one OAC Championships

AKRON- The Wilmington College women's swimming team competed in their first finals session of the OAC Championships Thursday. The three day championship consists of a prelims and finals session each day. The top sixteen prelims times advance to finals and are the only swims of the day that are eligible for team points. Additionally, those swimming in a consolation final are not eligible for the top eight spots, even if they turn in a time worthy of a spot in the top eight.

At the conclusion of a strong showing in Thursday's finals, the Fightin' Quakers are sitting fifth with 90 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Fightin' Quakers opened the meet in record setting fashion with the women's 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of freshmen Hannah Houston (Morrow, OH/Wilmington) and Alyssa Rogers (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge), senior Elyse Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame), and junior Samantha Glish (Louisville, KY/Ballard) completed the eight laps in 1:40.39, breaking the WC record by over two seconds. The time also placed the quartet fourth.

  • Houston, Glish, and Rogers also competed in the individual 50-yard freestyle. Houston was the top finisher in the event for the Fightin' Quakers, posting a 24.61 for third. Glish was next, finishing sixth with a time of 24.90. Rogers clocked in at 25.58, achieving 14th in the field.

  • In the final event of the evening, the 400-yard medley relay, WC earned fifth. The same quartet as the earlier relay (Houston, Rogers, Spraul, Glish) touched the wall in 4:17.68.

HEAD COACH TRIP BREEN QUOTES

  • "We had a great first day. Typically I'm nervous about the first day because we usually swim with too much emotion, we're too excited. But we got up and raced- and we raced well! For the remainder of the sessions, we have to continue to race, we have to be engaged, and we have to have fun. If we do those things, if we can create a collective, positive energy and attitude, we'll have a great meet."

WHAT'S NEXT

  • Day two (Friday) prelims are slated to begin at 10 AM with finals at 6 PM.

  • Day three (Saturday) prelims will begin at 10 AM with finals at 5:45 PM.
