Three records fall at OAC championships

AKRON – The Wilmington College swim teams competed in the second day of the Ohio Athletic Conference swimming championships Friday at the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.

WHERE THEY STAND

The women's team is sixth of seven teams with 141 points. John Carroll leads the way with 525 points, followed by Mount Union (499), Ohio Northern (466), Baldwin Wallace (246), Transylvania (236), Wilmington and Manchester (99).

The men's team is fourth of seven teams with 315 points. Ohio Northern leads the way with 543 points, followed by Mount Union (455), John Carroll (368), Wilmington, Baldwin Wallace (213), Transylvania (143) and Manchester (91).

HOW THEY GOT HERE

Senior Rachel Routzong (Urbana, OH/Urbana) swam the 200 freestyle three times Friday, and trimmed seconds off her time in each swim.
Junior Haley Rowland (Fairfield, OH/Xenia Christian) and freshman Rachel O'Donnell (Seven Hills, OH/Normandy) also performed well in the 200 freestyle.
Senior David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) continued his record-breaking meet. A day after setting the OAC record in the 50 freestyle, Hawk set the school record in the 200 freestyle in the prelims with the time of 1:42.19. He earned all-OAC honors by placing third in the finals with the time of 1:42.80.
Junior Brendan Tirado (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) and sophomore Jason Prible (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) also qualified for the finals in the 200, placing sixth and seventh, respectively, in 1:45.33 and 1:47.57.
Tirado, Prible and Hawk were joined by junior Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) to set a school record in the 800 freestyle relay (7:01.84).
Hawk wasn't the only individual swimmer to etch his name in the WC record books as junior Spraul established a new mark in the 400 individual medley (4:14.98). He shaved nearly five seconds off of his preliminary time.
Sophomore Cody Nash (Fresno, CA/Kingbury) was victorious in the B Final of the 100 breaststroke (1:00.23). His time in the B Finals were faster than two swimmers in finals.

"I am pleased with the way we performed today," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "Tomorrow is going to be a tough day. It's going to be all about the team and finishing the season strong."
On David Hawk, "He is having an incredible weekend," said Breen. "He has an OAC record, a B 'cut'. He is swimming well."
"Erik put together a great swim in the 400 IM," said Breen. "The 400 IM is a tough race to swim. You have to use all of your muscles and you have to swim it twice."
"Rachel O'Donnell is having an incredible meet," said Breen.

WHAT'S NEXT

The season comes to an end with the third and final day of the Ohio Athletic Conference championships. The following events – 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and the 1650 freestyle.
