WILMINGTON, Ohio - Maddie Scott scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season as the Wilmington College women's soccer team defeated Mount St. Joseph University on Wednesday evening by a final score of 4-2.
The first half was a fast-paced, back-and-forth affair. Mckenzie Schneeman had two shots in the first four minutes for the Lions, each sliding just wide of the goal. Wilmington seemed to get a firm grip on the match as it fired three shots in three minutes before finally scoring on the fourth shot. A Shannon Jamieson corner kick was headed into goal by Madison VanSuch, her first goal of the season. Unfazed, the Lions scored a minute later as Ella Pittman sent a free kick onto the box and Poetrie Bedgood sent it home. Neither team would score again in the first half.
MSJ goalkeeper Alyse Harris was tested early in the second half as Elizabeth Matthews sent a shot just high and Heidi Edens sent a shot floating over the goalkeeper's head only to be denied by the post. VanSuch once again made her presence felt as she found Maddie Scott in the box for her first assist of the season. Alex Wilson made several dangerous incursions into the goal box and eventually drew a penalty. Jamieson would finish the penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season, and put the finishing touches on a fantastic evening with an 80th-minute assist to Maddie Scott giving the Quakers a 4-1 lead.
Coach Kinder was effusive in his praise of VanSuch and Jamieson after the game stating, "The play of Madison and Shannon was massive for us. Not only did they combine for two goals and three assists on the night, they disrupted nearly every attack MSJ had."
MSJ would add a late penalty kick goal, but would go on to loose by a final score of 4-2.
Maddie Scott scored two goals this evening giving her five on the season. Shannon Jamieson scored her fourth goal and her fourth and fifth assist. Madison VanSuch scored her first goal and recorded her first assist. Goalkeeper Lauren Galloway recorded the win for the Quakers. Kerigan Pollard and Poetrie Bedgood each scored for the Lions.
Up next, the Quakers will face Franklin College on the road this Saturday at 1 p.m.
