WILMINGTON, Ohio - The WIlmington College women's soccer team defeated Earlham College in the annual Quaker Bowl rivalry game on Wednesday evening.
The Fightin' Quakers improved to a positive record 3-2-0 while the loss brings the Hustlin' Quakers to 5-2-0.
The best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 38th minute when Taylor Huffman got a shot off from a loose ball bouncing in the penalty area, the shot missed its target sailing wide right of the goalpost. The only goal of the match came in the 51st minute from Madison Wiedeman. Huffman dribbled the ball deep into the Earlham penalty area and took a shot which deflected off goalkeeper Mel Johnson, the deflection floated right to Wiedeman who took a shot off a volley which cleared Johnson's hands into the goal. Wilmington found another good opportunity to score in the 76th minute by way of Tiffany Hayes. Hayes managed to get clear space with the ball just inside the Earlham penalty area, however a miss hit on the shot caused an easy save for Johnson.
Earlham had a good chance at forcing overtime in the 85th minute from Yana Miller who took a shot from distance travelling toward the upper corner of the Wilmington goal, but Lauren Galloway saved the Fightin' Quakers' shutout.
Wilmington out shot Earlham 14-4 and held that advantage in corner kicks 7-0.
Galloway recorded two saves in her victory while Johnson managed four saves in the loss.
The Fightin' Quakers will return to action Saturday at Wittenberg for an 11 a.m. match.
