Women's Soccer Hosts Wittenberg in Home-Opener on Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's soccer hosts Wittenberg University for the home-opener on Wednesday evening. Kickoff from Williams Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Wittenberg. The Fightin' Quakes are 1-1 overall after splitting games with Defiance College, a 2-0 win, and Westminster College (Pennsylvania), a 2-0 loss, at the Defiance Tournament last weekend. The Tigers are also 1-1 after a 4-1 loss at the hands of Capital University and a 3-0 shutout of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Coaches: Steve Spirk enters his 27th season as Wilmington's head women's soccer coach. Spirk, a 1982 alumnus, has led the Quakers to six NCAA Division III Tournaments, eight conference championships and over 300 victories during his tenure. A member of the Wilmington Athletics Hall of Fame, Spirk was a four-time All-American and holds several of the College's men's soccer records. Katie Robinson, who led Wittenberg to a 9-7-3 record in 2017, enters her second season as head coach of the Tigers.

The Players: Kaitlin Evans and Taylor Leake have both scored goals for Wilmington. Alex Vestal leads the squad in shots with 10 including being tied with Addison Tiffany for the team lead in shots in goal with six. Four different Tigers – Shannon Brueck, Megan Davis, Alix Steele and Sydney Weaver – have all netted one goal for Wittenberg.

Series History: Wilmington is 9-11-5 against Wittenberg since the 1986 season. The Tigers won last year's meeting 1-0 while the Quakers last victory in the series game during the 2012 campaign (also a 1-0 win). More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
