CINCINNATI – An early miscue was the determining factor as the Wilmington College women's soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 loss to Transylvania Friday in the opening game of the Mount St. Joseph Invitational.

"We misplayed a ball that led to their break away," said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. "We gave them their only chance, and they took advantage of it."

Playing in a driving rain for the entire match, the ninth-minute goal was the lone tally for either team.

Spirk witnessed some good things on the pitch, but realized his team still needs to make some minor adjustments.

"We moved the ball well, we just missed the final pass," said Spirk. "We still need to create more opportunities, and we will get better in that regard."

Wilmington held the 10-6 advantage in shots, and the 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Sophomore Alex Vestal (Orlando, FL/Lake Nona) finished with a team-high three shots on goal. Senior Ana Hosler (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) took the loss in goal, making three saves on four shots.

Wilmington (0-1) returns to action 3:30 p.m. Saturday, playing the host Lions.
