Women's Soccer Captures Fourth Straight Win

Wilmington College's women's soccer team will ride a four-game win streak into its Ohio Athletic Conference schedule next week after edging visiting Manchester 1-0 Saturday afternoon (Sept. 26).

The Fightin' Quakers got several good looks at the goal in the first half but a pair of caroms off the crossbar was as close as they got until senior Ashley Stockton (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) scored unassisted in the 71st minute.

In spite of the close score, Wilmington dominated play with a 26 to 4 shot advantage and 4 to 1 margin on cornerkicks.

The Fightin' Quakers' defense gave up only three shots-on-goal, but goalkeeper Brittany Ross (Covington, OH/ Newton) easily handled them as she netted her sixth win of the season. The Spartans' goalkeeper, Caroline Smith, made 14 saves as she kept Manchester in the match.

Wilmington completes its nonconference part of the schedule with a 7-3 mark while Manchester falls to 2-5.

Coach Steve Spirk knows the importance of going into the Ohio Athletic with momentum.

"We've had a really good last two weeks," he said about the streak. "We played some tough teams and won some good games. We've been talking about getting ready for the OAC since the start of the season."

The Fightin's Quakers host Marietta College Saturday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
