WSOC plays to draw in season finale

The Wilmington College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Heidelberg Saturday, and wrapped up their 2014 season.

It marked the final collegiate game for seniors Taylor Franklin (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes), Caroline Guindon (Barnesville, OH/Barnesville), Camille Gentile (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg), Sammi Miller (West Chester, OH/Lakota East), Lauren Hamrock (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek), Sara Bishop (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) and Angela Phillips (Union, OH/Northmont). Wilmington finished 7-11-1 overall, 1-7-1 in the OAC.

"Anytime you play your final game, at home on Senior Night, you hope the kids come out and play hard, and they did just that," said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. "I think 1-1 was a fair result."

Heidelberg took the lead in the 29th minute, but the Fightin' Quakers quickly retaliated. Hamrock beat her defender down the left sideline and slotted a pass past the keeper, and sophomore Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay) tapped it into the back of the net.

Wilmington statistically dominated the first half with 11 shots compared to four from the Student Princes. HC outshot Wilmington 8-6 over the final 65 minutes.

"The second half we went back and forth," said Spirk. "They put pressure on us in the second half. We didn't break, and defended well."

Franklin and freshman Ana Hosler (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) split time in goal. Franklin allowed one goal on two shots, while Hosler recorded three second-half saves.
