Scott, Bailey score in OAC win

The Wilmington College women's soccer team picked up its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season Wednesday, beating Muskingum,2-0, at Williams Stadium.

With the victory, the Fightin' Quakers snapped an eight-game losing streak. Wilmington improved to 7-11 overall, 1-7 OAC, while the Fighting Muskies fell to 9-7-1 overall, 2-5 OAC.

"Muskingum has won a couple games in the conference, and is a solid team," said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. "I knew going in they had some good players, some dangerous players, and that we had to come out and play well. We had an all-around good game tonight. We talked about playing an entire 90 minutes and scoring some goals. We spent the last few days on finishing and it paid off today."

Sophomore Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay) got the scoring underway in the 23rd minute. After beating a defender down the right sideline, Scott had a perfectly placed shot at the upper 90 for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Wilmington added an insurance goal in the 43rd minute. A scrum in the middle of the box following a corner kick led to freshman Alexis Bailey (Middletown, OH/Middletown) eventually finding the back of the net for her second career goal.

Senior Taylor Franklin (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) saved the only shot she faced as WC held a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.

"We knew (Moriah Mathies) was their player and they had some speed," said Spirk. "But our defense played exceptional today, and really showed what kind of defense they are capable of."

The Fightin' Quakers wrap up the 2014 season 7 p.m. Saturday, hosting Heidelberg at Williams Stadium.
