Penalty kick sends WSOC to 2 OT loss

WESTERVILLE – So close, yet so far away for the Wilmington College women's soccer team. A penalty kick with less than three minutes away allowed league-leading Otterbein to escape with a 2-1 double overtime win over the Fightin' Quakers Tuesday at Memorial Stadium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

Senior Sammi Miller (West Chester, OH/Lakota East) appeared to keep the game-winner out the back of the net with her body, but was called for a handball and given a yellow card – setting up the winning score.

It's a heartbreaking decision for a team that was less than three minutes from securing the victory in regulation. Despite unleashing an offensive barrage with 18 shots – nine in each half – Otterbein still trailed 1-0 late in the match.

Senior Taylor Franklin (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) made six saves over the first 86 minutes, but couldn't stop a rebound off the crossbar in the 87th minute as Otterbein found the equalizer.

Wilmington was outshot 22-8, including 4-0 in the extra sessions.

Senior Lauren Hamrock (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) tallied Wilmington's only goal with a nice goal in the 21st minute. After beating a defender down the left side, Hamrock lofted a shot past another Otterbein defender and its keeper from nearly 20 yards out.

Wilmington (6-10 overall, 0-6 OAC), losers of seven straight, travels to Mount Union 7 p.m. Saturday for its final road game of the season.
