WSOC outshoots Grizzlies, falls 1-0

FRANKLIN, IN – The Wilmington College women's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 1-0 loss to Rose-Hulman Friday in the Franklin College Invitational.

"In the first half, I thought we dominated, but we couldn't score," said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. "We knew they were a good defensive team that didn't allow a lot of goals last year. In the second half they picked their game up and put pressure on us.

"We had chances that we just didn't put away," Spirk added.

The Engineers tallied the game's only goal in the 77th minute off a corner kick.

Wilmington managed to put 12 shots on frame, while holding RHIT to just two shots on goal. WC had six shots on goal in each half.

"We battled hard and we have a lot of things to build on," said Spirk. "We have to get better on both sides of the ball. That is why we play these early games."

Junior Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) managed four shots, all on goal, while sophomore Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay) finished with four shots, three on goal. Senior Taylor Franklin (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) fell to 0-1 on the season, playing all 90 minutes and making one save.

Wilmington (0-1) returns to the pitch 7:30 Saturday against Franklin.
