Tough loss for women's soccer

The Wilmington College women' soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in double overtime Tuesday to Otterbein in Ohio Athletic Conference play at Charlie Gilhart Field.

Playing without two starting defenders – Bonnie Grace (Cincinnati, OH/Wyoming) and Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) – the Fightin' Quakers looked destined to record the win behind the stellar goalkeeping of freshman Grace Hignite (Clayton, OH/Northmont). Hignite recorded a career-high nine saves, including a couple spectacular saves in the second half.

However, the Cardinals scored with 1:42 remaining in the second half to knot the game, and then scored less than four minutes into the second overtime for the victory.

Wilmington suffers its second straight OAC loss to fall to 3-3 and 9-6-1 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 4-2 in the OAC, 9-5-1 overall.

Wilmington took the early lead as sophomore Rachelle Bowen (Xenia, OH/Xenia) took a great pass from junior Brooke Lamb (Waynesville, OH/Clinton-Massie) that split two defenders and beat the goalkeeper in the game's fifth minute.

It marks just the fourth time this season, and second straight game, the Fightin' Quakers have been outshot as Otterbein held the 20-8 advantage. Wilmington is 0-3-1 in such games.

Wilmington returns to the field 4:30 p.m. Saturday for the final home game of the season, meeting Marietta at Charlie Gilhart Field.
