Caporale leads @WCWLax to home win

For the first time in school history, the Wilmington College women's lacrosse team experienced the thrill of victory in front of their home fans as the Fightin' Quakers beat Thomas More, 11-3, Wednesday at Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.

"We played clean, and fixed some things we were struggling with," said Wilmington head coach Brett Yenger. "We definitely worked the ball in the attack, and gave our middies a break. Helped us exercise some different strategies going into the next game."

Wilmington scored seven unanswered goals, spanning the two halves, to break a 2-2 tie. Following the run of goals, the Fightin' Quakers led 9-2 with a shade under 14 minutes remaining in the game. Thomas More finally stopped the run of WC goals, but the home team finished the scoring with two late goals.

Freshman Jenni Caporale (Louisville, KY/Ballard) kicked the scoring off, taking the opening draw control, and scoring just 21 seconds into the game. The Saints scored a minute later, but Caporale helped WC regain the lead at 27:08.

Once again Thomas More netted an equalizer, but sophomore Nikki Northern (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) gave WC the lead at 24:07 – and the run was on.

Caporale finished the game with four goals in nine shots, while senior Loryn Bryson (Carlisle, OH/Carlisle) added two goals with one assists.

Junior Katie Bennett (Newport, OH/Frontier) was a brick wall in the net, making a season-high 14 saves and allowing a career-low three goals.

"Our defense had to do a lot less, so they were less tired," said Yenger. "They were able to make bigger stops. Katie Bennett was great in goal, had a lot of saves in key moments; all around good game."

Wilmington (2-3) returns home 3 p.m. Saturday to face Franciscan in non-conference action. The women's game follows the men's game that starts at 1 p.m.
