Koerner nets three goals, assist in loss

BEXLEY – The Wilmington College women's lacrosse team fell to Capital Wednesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action, 25-5, at Bernlohr Stadium.

The Fightin' Quakers got off to a fast start scoring two of the first three goals, both by senior Sammy Koerner (Fairfield, OH/Badin) on free position shots. However, Capital rattled off 13 unanswered goals before senior Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) found the back of the net with a shade of three minutes remaining in the first half.

Sophomore Rachel Routzong (Urbana, OH/Urbana) and Koerner scored in the second half as Wilmington was outscored 10-2 over the final 30 minutes.

Koerner finished with three goals on four shots to give her a team-high 24 goals on the season. She added her third assist of the season as well. In addition to her goal, Gutowski finished with a team-high five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Routzong added three caused turnovers as well.

Sophomore Emily Phipps (Heath, OH/Heath) fell to 0-5 on the season, allowing 19 goals on 26 shots.

The Fightin' Quakers committed 25 turnovers. However, only five of them came in the second half. Wilmington was relatively even in draw controls, battling to a 17-15 disadvantage.

Wilmington (0-11 overall, 0-2 OAC) returns home for three straight games to end the season. They kick off the three-game stand 1 p.m. Friday against Mount Union at Williams Stadium.
