Gutowski scores half goals in loss

Wilmington College women's lacrosse team held their own in a non-conference match Saturday at Williams Stadium, falling to Hiram, 12-10.

Junior Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) score a season-high six goals and an assist in the loss.

The two teams traded goals over the first 22 minutes, finding the back of the net three times each.

Gutowski scored the first and last goal during a spurt in which the Fightin' Quakers scored four of the next five goals to take a 7-4 lead. Senior Sammy Koerner (Fairfield, OH/Badin) and freshman Kiki Hall (Westerville, OH/Central) also scored in that stretch.

The Terriers pulled to within two goals with a goal 31 seconds before the end of the half.

Wilmington reclaimed its three-goal lead with a Gutowski goal to start the second half, but Hiram seized control moments after scoring six straight to take the 11-8 lead.

Hall and Gutowski rounded out the Wilmington scoring with goals at 8:53 and 7:52, respectively.

Junior Loryn Bryson (Carlisle, OH/Carlisle) also added a goal for Wilmington.

Sophomore Emily Phipps (Heath, OH/Heath), in her first start, made six saves in 60 minutes of action.
