BEREA, Ohio - Baldwin Wallace University (BW) nailed eight three-pointers in the first half and held a 16-point halftime lead for an 90-63 victory over the Wilmington College women's basketball team in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets, who came into the game shooting just over 35 percent from beyond the arc, connected on four triples on eight attempts in the first quarter and led 24-15 after 10 minutes. BW would extend its lead to as many as 18 points (43-24) late in the second quarter, but a basket from Mackenzie Campbell and a triple from Savannah Hooper cut the deficit to 45-29 at halftime.
The Fightin' Quakers could not get any closer in the second half as the Yellow Jackets stretched its advantage to 20 points midway through the third quarter and held the lead for an OAC win.
BW finished 33-of-66 (50.0 percent) from the field including 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) from distance compared to 22-of-54 (40.7 percent) from the field for Wilmington. The Quakers did win the rebounding battle 36-31 and make 17 free throws. The Yellow Jackets countered with a 22-8 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Campbell led Wilmington individually with 16 points while Hooper added 10. Emily Harman finished with six points and seven rebounds while Maddie Snider added seven points and two rebounds off the bench.
Katie Smith led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field while also dishing out four assists for BW. Kasey Hughes finished with a dozen points in 14 minutes.
"Offensively, I was pleased with some things," Head Women's Basketball Coach Jerry Scheve said. "Defensively, we were not good enough to stop them [BW] today. We need to get better, and we will.
Wilmington (7-6, 2-4 OAC) returns to action on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. home contest against Muskingum University.
