WILMINGTON, Ohio - Mackenzie Campbell scored her 1000th career point midway through the fourth quarter, but it was Capital University who came out on top in a 61-35 victory in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action from Hermann Court on Wednesday evening.
The two teams were tied 11-11 after the first quarter thanks to eight points and two three-pointers from Kelly Noll, but the Crusaders took a 19-14 lead midway through the second quarter. The Fightin' Quakers got back within a basket on a layup from Faith Teaford and an old-fashioned three-point play from Campbell. After trading baskets, Savannah Hooper cut the deficit to a single point (22-21) at the 1:31 mark in the second quarter, but the Crusaders ended the half on a 6-1 run capped by a Caroline Taphorn as the half ended.
Trailing 28-22 at halftime, Capital outscored Wilmington 20-6 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Taphorn led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Erin Risner had 12 points and seven boards for Capital. Campbell scored eight points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Quakers.
"From the day Mackenzie [Campbell] has come on campus, she has been a joy to coach," Head Women's Basketball Coach Jerry Scheve said. "She gives you everything she has, and I'm happy for her to achieve this accomplishment."
Teaford scored seven points while Noll added nine points in 20 minutes off the bench.
"Kelly Noll gave us a spark off the bench in the first quarter," Scheve said.
Capital shot 24-of-53 (45.3 percent) from the field compared to 11-of-45 (24.4 percent) for Wilmington. The Crusaders held a 39-27 rebounding edge.
Wilmington dips to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the OAC. The Quakers will travel to Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
