Fightin’ Quakers, Tip-Off Tournament Champions!

WILMINGTON, Ohio- The Wilmington College women's basketball team completed play in the Damon's/Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon. After defeating Mary Baldwin University on Friday, the Fightin' Quakers took on Spalding University in the championship match, today. Wilmington won handily, 85-74.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Fightin' Quakers held the lead from the beginning of the game, never once letting Spalding surpass them in point total.

  • Wilmington flew out of the gate, with a scoring run within the first two contested minutes of play leading to a score of 16-8.

  • They began pulling away at the end of the first and into the beginning of the second quarter. In that period, the team went on another scoring run, at the end of which they had distanced themselves from Spalding by 30 points (26-56). The run spanned 10-minutes on the clock.

  • The score differential stayed between 20 and 30 points for the duration of the second and third quarters; during the fourth quarter, Spalding pushed the Fightin' Quakers defense, closing the gap. Spalding got within 15 of the Fightin' Quakers with four minutes left on the clock and continued to close from there.

  • Freshman Ashley Morris (Kenton, OH/Kenton) hit two three-pointers in a one minute span to help create more breathing room, giving the Fightin' Quakers a 64-82 lead on their way to victory.

  • Two Fightin' Quakers in the starting line up hit double figures in the contest. Freshman McKayla Binkley (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay) led the team with 15 points. She was followed closely by senior Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) with 12 points.

  • Binkley, sophomore Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin), and freshman Faith Teaford (Portland, OH/Southern) all tied for team-high rebounds, finishing the game with a total of four boards.

  • Once again, the Fightin' Quakers won the rebounding battle, 25-to-21, a stat they have won in both of their wins this season.

  • Wilmington was 32-for-66 in field goals, overall, and 10-for-20 from the long range.
