AUSTINTOWN – Three Wilmington College women's basketball players earned postseason accolades in a vote of the Ohio Athletic Conference coaches, the league announced today (Wednesday, March 1, 2017).
Sophomore Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) picked up first team honors, while seniors Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) and Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton Massie) earned honorable mention laurels.
"The best thing about all three of these players, as well as this team in general, was that they were quality people, who were really a joy to coach," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve.
Campbell is only the second Wilmington sophomore to earn first team recognition, joining WC Hall-of-Famer Tara Rausch – who was a first team honoree in 2002.
The 2016 OAC Freshman of the Year, Campbell was second in the conference in scoring with 15.9 points per game. Her 50.3 percent accuracy from the field was tops amongst OAC guards and fourth overall. She was second on the team with 5.9 rebounds and added 1.7 assists per game.
"To be named first team All-OAC as a sophomore is quite an accomplishment," said Scheve. "Mackenzie worked hard in the off-season, and became a much more complete player for us this year. We ask an awful lot out of her on both ends of the court, and she was able to give us what we needed. More importantly, she is an outstanding person and an excellent student."
For the third straight season, Jefferson was named all-conference, becoming the seventh player to be a three-time All-OAC selection in their career.
The guard was second on the team with 10.4 points, third in rebounding with 4.6 and led the team with 2.4 steals. She finished in the conference with 68 steals, and in second in WC history in that category.
"Brittany had a great four-year career and is very deserving of this honor," said Scheve. "Her ability to play both the point and off guard positions at a high level was vital to our team's success. When the game was on the line, Brittaney wanted the ball in her hands, and more often than not she would deliver."
Moyer was the team's best post defender, and led the conference with 9.5 rebounds per game. Her 266 rebounds are eighth on the school's single-season list. She added 6.5 points and was tied for the team lead with 2.4 assists.
"Mary also had a great four-year career," said Scheve. "A natural point guard, Mary became one of the dominant post players in the league. She excelled at both rebounding and defense, while her ball handling and passing brought an extra dimension to our team."
Wilmington advanced to the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament finals, falling to unbeaten and #5 Ohio Northern, 70-55. The 18 victories were the most by a WC team since the 2007-08 season.
