NEW CONCORD – Sophomore Mackenzie Campbell recorded her first double-double of the season as the Wilmington College women's basketball team took sole possession of second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with the 67-60 victory over Muskingum Wednesday at the Anne C. Steele Center.
It marked the victory OAC road victory for Wilmington this season.
"It's a really, really good win for us," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "It was our first good win on the road. It was important from the standpoint that it was a win against a very good team. Defensively, overall, it was our best game of the year. Muskingum has always given us troubles with their ability to score. They have a lot of different ways to score."
Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) scored six of her team-high 21 points in the pivotal third quarter as Wilmington opened the game by outscoring the Muskies, 19-8. She added a career-high 13 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
"Defensively, she was very good tonight," said Scheve. "It was probably the best rebounding game since she has been here. She rebounded well today, and obviously got us some big baskets."
The 10-minute stretch following halftime has been fruitful this season as WC outscores its opponent by an average of six points. It's also the quarter in which Wilmington scores the most points and surrenders the least amount.
Muskingum led the just once, 3-2, and the Fightin' Quakers scored seven straight to reclaim the lead for good. Wilmington added a 9-2 run near the end of the first quarter to build an eight-point bulge.
"We had spurts where we played well, and spurts when we didn't play," said Scheve. "It was a good win for us. We played hard, competed well and got the job done."
Senior Ashley Andracki (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) broke out of her scoring funk with a career-high 15 points and a career-high eight boards. She added three assists and a steal. Junior Emily Harman (Versailles, OH/Versailles) also dropped a career-high with 12 points.
Wilmington (8-5 overall, 4-2 OAC) hosts John Carroll (4-10 overall, 2-5 OAC) 3 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
