Moyer sets new tournament record
Senior Mary Moyer established a new Fred Raizk Tournament record with 18 rebounds as the Wilmington College women's basketball team advanced to the championship game with the 72-52 victory over Alma Tuesday at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.
The win set up a meeting with the reigning National Champions and No. 4 Thomas More, which knocked off Ohio Christian, 87-59. Alma meets OCU 1 p.m. Wednesday in the consolation game, followed by WC and TMC at 3 p.m.
"Mary has been rebounding well all year, and is one of the rebounding leaders in the league," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "For whatever reason, she hasn't had a lot of offensive rebounds. She really changed that around today, and that is what I am the most pleased about."
The 18 rebounds were also a career-best for Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton-Massie), who had nine offensive boards. Wilmington doubled up its opponent on the glass, 52-26, and the Fightin' Quakers finished with 23 offensive boards.
Wilmington grabbed 20 of the game's first 22 rebounds, which enabled WC to overcome a slow shooting start. The Fightin' Quakers shot just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from the field, but still held a nine-point advantage after the first 10 minutes.
"After Saturday when we shot the ball well and got the easy win, but didn't rebound well, we really stressed the last couple of days when you don't shoot the ball well," said Scheve. "We have to pick up other parts of our game. Obviously tonight we didn't shoot the ball well, but we attacked the glass, got two, three, four shots. That was enabled us to keep the lead for the first three-fourths of the game."
The home team was able to build their lead despite leading scorers Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) and Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) combined for two points at the break. Backcourt mates Ashley Andracki (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) and Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) picked up the slack, combining for 15 points.
Alma stayed within striking distance until the Fightin' Quakers scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, and the lead ballooned to as much as 25 in the victory.
Hooper led the team with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Moyer added 12 points to go along with her 18 rebounds, two assists and one steal. Andracki finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Campbell overcame the aforementioned slow start to tally 10 points with five rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.
