LQB goes cold late in second half

ALLIANCE – The Wilmington College women's basketball team fell to Mount Union, 61-44, Saturday in the regular season finale at the MAAC. The Fightin' Quakers were held to just nine points over the final 15 minutes of the game.

Foul trouble and injuries depleted the Wilmington backcourt as sophomore guard Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) and freshman guard Ellie Kivell (Hamilton, OH/Lakota East) combined to play just seven minutes.

"The stat sheet pretty much tells the game," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "We couldn't buy a shot, and defensively, I thought we were okay. We just gave up too many offensive rebounds. Rebounding, or the lack of, was the biggest storyline of the game."

Mount Union held a 50-30 edge on the glass, and doubled up WC in offensive boards, 16-8. The offensive rebounding led to an 11-5 advantage in second-chance points. When you shoot only 20 percent (10-of-48) from the field, the lack of extra chances via offensive boards can be detrimental.

"In the first eight, nine minutes of the game, I didn't think we got good shots," said Scheve. "In the last half of the first half, we were able to get and make some shots.

"We have to put this game behind us quickly," Scheve continued. "We just have to find out who we are playing Monday, and get ready to play them."

Wilmington has earned the fifth seed in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference tournament, and seems to be destined to host Marietta 7:30 p.m. Monday. The Pioneers, who is currently the eight seed, can move up to the seventh seed with a victory Sunday over Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears are the current top seed in the tournament with a 15-2 league record.

A Marietta win Sunday would set up a rematch with the Purple Raiders.

Junior Ashley Andracki (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) led the team with nine points, while sophomore Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton-Massie) added seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
