Women's basketball falls to ONU

The Wilmington College women's basketball team fell to Ohio Northern Wednesday, 69-52, in Ohio Athletic Conference action in Fred Raizk Arena at Hermann Court.

The Fightin' Quakers didn't have any scorers reach double figures as sophomore Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) and junior Ashley Andracki (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) each tallied nine points.

"This was a night you hope you don't have very often," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "It was a night that the other team played well and we played poorly. To complicate that, I don't think anything went our way. We made unforced errors that resulted in open shots. It was just a night that we need to put behind us, and move on."

Ohio Northern opened up a double digit lead midway through the first half. Wilmington was able to cut its deficit in half, but the Polar Bears finished the half on an 11-2 run. WC couldn't get their deficit under 11 points in the second half.

The Polar Bears' size were a part of Wilmington's problem as ONU held a plus-15 advantage on the glass, along with a 30-22 advantage on points in the paint and 12-6 advantage in second chance points. WC's need to double the post enabled ONU to get open shots, and they took advantage to the tune of 48.1 percent shooting. Wilmington shot just 30.4 percent from the field.

"That's a reason things didn't go our way," said Scheve of the rebounding disadvantage. "That is just simple executed of basic fundamentals. We haven't been very good at it, and when you play (ONU) you have to be better at it."

Guards Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) and Jefferson each pulled down four rebounds to lead the team.

Wilmington (8-6 overall, 3-4 OAC) travels to Muskingum 3 p.m. Saturday.
