Halftime lead evaporates in loss

ADA – The second half continued to be a bugaboo for the Wilmington College women's basketball team as Ohio Northern outscored the Fightin' Quakers by 18 points to post the 63-48 victory Wednesday at the ONU Sports Center in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

"It's something we have to get fixed," Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said of his team's second half woes. "But its not as simple as saying 'we have to play better'."

Despite playing most of the first half with senior point guard Haley Howard (Uhrichsville, OH/New Philadelphia), thanks to foul trouble, Wilmington had a halftime lead. The play of Jada Brown (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) and Whitney Barfkneckt (Vandalia, OH/Butler) in the backcourt was paramount to WC's first half success.

Not only did that duo hold down the point guard position, senior forward Bethany Ahrens (Versailles, OH/Versailles) picked up the scoring slack. She was 4-of-5 from the field in the first half for eight of her 10 points.

The Fightin' Quakers held Ohio Northern without a basket for nearly all of the final four minutes of the first half to take the three-point into the locker room.

Wilmington held off the home team for the early portions of the second half, but a 9-0 run gave ONU the momentum they need to record the win.

Senior Makenzie Wippel (Orient, OH/Westfall) finished with 10 points and two rebounds, while junior Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) and freshman Hannah Haeseker (Germantown, OH/Germantown) pulling down six rebounds each.

Wilmington (12-12 overall, 9-8 OAC) faces Mount Union 3 p.m. Saturday in their regular season finale.
