Softball Opens OAC Play With Muskingum on Friday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team will open up Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play when the Fightin' Quakers host Muskingum University on Saturday.

The Series: Wilmington and Muskingum will play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday. The series was originally scheduled for Saturday but moved up a day due to inclement weather.

The Teams: Wilmington is currently on a four-game winning streak and will try to build off momentum from its impressive 6-2 start on the spring trip to Florida. The Muskies stand at 11-1 overall with their only loss being to Rowan University (New Jersey) in the final game of their spring trip to Florida.

Coaches: Beth Floyd is in her 11th season as head coach of Wilmington and is the winningest softball coach in school history. She is also an Associate Director of Athletics. Kari Winters, a former All-American catcher for Muskingum, is in her eighth season as head coach at her alma mater.

Hitters to Watch: Sawyer Hooper has had a great start to the season for the Quakers. She is batting the highest batting average at .467. Not far behind is Allison Pierce, who is batting an impressive .450. Jillia Cook has 10 hits and a batting average of .417. Savannah Hooper leads the Quakers with 11 runs, while batting a .400 clip. Karsyn Shaffer leads the Muskies offensively with a .638 batting average to go along with eight RBI. Krissy Hughes also hits over the .500 clip (.525) with 11 RBIs and six walks.

Pitchers to Watch: Grace Shell leads Wilmington with a 3-0 record and a 2.15 ERA in 26 innings pitched. Beth Periscano has also won three games, and like Shell, has pitched three complete games. Rachel Eberling has a 4-1 record with four complete games for Muskingum. She has an ERA of 4.41.

OAC Pitcher of the Week: Grace Shell is the reigning OAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for her performance on the Quakers' spring trip to Florida. She won 3-of-4 starts in Florida last week. In total, Shell pitched 26 innings with 19 strikeouts and scattering 23 hits and five walks.

Recent History: Wilmington has not beaten Muskingum in the last 10 seasons. The Muskies won 4-2 and 6-3 last season.
