MARIETTA – The Wilmington College softball team was limited to seven hits over two games, and dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games Sunday to Marietta. The games were rescheduled from Saturday.
MARIETTA 8, WILMINGTON 1
The Pioneers scored all eight of their runs with two outs, including three homeruns, in recording the 8-1 victory in the opener.
Wilmington took the lead with an unearned run in the second inning, but MC answered with one in its portion of the second. Marietta tacked on a three spot in the third, and then scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Fightin' Quakers managed four hits, singles by Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington), Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City), Whitney Edwards (Frankfort, OH/Franklin County) and Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field).
Sophomore Becca Carpenter, 4-12, (South Charleston, OH/Southeastern) allowed six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
MARIETTA 2, WILMINGTON 0
Marietta used some short game and a long ball to complete the sweep with a 2-0 win.
The Pioneers scored in the first inning as the leadoff hitter, walked and stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a single. The second MC run came on a solo homerun in the fifth inning.
Three Wilmington players – Whitney Edwards, Chandler Fields (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) and Taylor Hill (New Concord, OH/John Glenn) – recorded hits.
Sophomore Beth Persicano, 2-6, (Knoxville, TN/Cincinnati Turpin) allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings of action. She finished with three strikeouts and two walks.
Wilmington added a game to its schedule 3 p.m. Monday, hosting Transylvania in a non-conference doubleheader.
