Monnier sets single-season strikeout mark, again

LOUISVILLE – Senior Danielle Monnier set the school's single-season strikeout mark for the third straight season, but the Wilmington College softball team was swept, 5-0 and 11-2, in a non-conference doubleheader by Spalding.

Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) entered the game tied for the seasonal mark she set last season, pushed her total on the season to an OAC-high 130. She allowed five runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks.

Spalding took advantage of a two-out error to score four runs in the third inning. The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth inning.

Wilmington was limited to just two hits – singles by senior Kaylee Cox (Elgin, OH/Elgin) and Monnier.

In the night cap, freshman Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) started the scoring second with a single. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a fielding error. Freshman Olivia Bauer recorded her first RBI of the season with a groundout. Sophomore Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) made it 2-0 with a RBI single.

However, Spalding scored 11 unearned runs over the next four innings to secure the win.

Trautman took the loss (4-10), allowing seven earned runs in two innings of work with three walks and a strikeout.

Six different players – Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie), Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly), Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley), Warren, Cox and Trautman – all recorded hits. Shilling's double was the lone extra base hit.

Wilmington (15-20) wraps up the season Saturday in a OAC doubleheader against Mount Union at the WC Softball Complex.
