Monnier handcuffs Franklin in sweep

Junior Danielle Monnier continued her dominant ways in the circle as she picked up both victories in Wilmington's non-conference doubleheader sweep of Franklin Monday, 8-0 and 7-6.

Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) scattered six hits with no runs and seven strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings as the Lady Quakers tied a school-record with 16 victories.

In the opening run-ruled win, freshman Megan Rachford (Germantown, OH/Valley View) got the scoring going with her first collegiate homer in the bottom of the second inning. Another freshman, Hillary Daria-White (Felicity, OH/Felicity Franklin) added to the WC tally with a two-run single in the fourth inning.

Wilmington continued to pile on the runs with three in the fifth inning, and a two-run homer by Brooke Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) capped the scoring in the sixth.

Rachford finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Byrne was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. It was the first multi-hit and RBI game for Daria-White as she finished with two hits and three RBI.

Sophomore Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley) recorded a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Wilmington take home the comeback 7-6 victory and complete the sweep.

After trading the team lead back-and-forth for most of the first four innings, Franklin used a three-run fifth to open up a 6-3 lead, and chase starter Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) from the game. However, Wilmington didn't panic and went right back to the task of keeping up with the Grizzlies.

A one-out single by Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) proceeded a two-run bomb off the bat of junior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) in the bottom of the fifth. Byrne's double in the sixth scoring freshman Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) with the tying run.

Franklin had a chance in the seventh thanks to two WC errors and a shot in the eighth following a lead-off double. But, Monnier slammed the door on both Franklin threats and Wilmington won it in the seventh.

Bryne had another three-hit performance, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI, while Shilling was 3-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Junior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie), who scored the winning run, added two hits as did Rachford and Warren, who recorded two RBI and two runs scored.

Wilmington (16-4) returns to OAC action 1 p.m. Saturday traveling to University Heights to face John Carroll.
