Whitaker Paces Men's Cross County at All-Ohio Intercollegates

AKRON, Ohio – Wilmington College freshman Evan Whitaker led the Fightin' Quakers performance at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Akron University on Saturday.

Whitaker finished the eight-kilometer course in 25:53.7, finishing in 81st place as one of the top freshmen from an NCAA Division III institution at the meet.

"Evan Whitaker was the third fastest DIII freshman in the race today," Head Coach Ron Combs said. "It's also won the fastest times for a freshman in our program's history."

Cameron Phelps was the next Quaker to cross the finish line, doing so in 136th place with a time of 26:41.1. Gage Clemens was 13 second and nine places behind Phelps.

Hunter Stith and Ryan Honkomp rounded out the top five finishers for Wilmington. Stith placed 160ths with a time of 27:07.6 while Honkomp took 180th with a time of 27:30.7.

As a team, Wilmington finished 22nd out of 39 teams as well as the 11th NCAA Division III team to cross the finish line.

"The guys got a little taste of success today," Combs said. "I hope they are hungry for more."

Wilmington will compete again on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Eagle Invitational in Warrenville, Illinois.
