Wilmington College junior Simon Heys has garnered Second Team Academic All-American honors from the College Sports Communicators (CSC), formerly known as CoSIDA. The award is the second Academic All-American honor for Heys as he was named Third Team last academic year.
Durr, who has been an assistant coach for the last four seasons, takes the reins from Head Coach Ron Combs, who has been the College's head track & field coach for a quarter century. Combs won't be going far, however, as he will remain head cross country coach and transition to assistant track & field coach.
Academic All-Conference selections have at least a cumulative 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) at the end of the semester preceding the end of the spring season and be a sophomore academically or above. The student-athlete must also be a member of a varsity team, in a sport sponsored by the league, as well as be enrolled in a full-time capacity.
For the first time since 2006, Wilmington will send four individuals - Simon Heys, JJ Durr, Nathan Borgan and Brady Vilvens - to the outdoor nationals meet.
The four individuals qualifying for nationals marks the first time in over a decade the program will take more than two people and the most Quakers to appear in the event since 2006.
In the hammer throw, JJ Durr won the event at the same place he was crowed the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Champion two weeks earlier with a heave of 192' 11".
The Wilmington High School alumnus crossed the finish line in 3:52.04 of the 1,500-meter run, breaking Alek Erwin's program record of 3:56.28 set on April 18, 2014.
Borgan entered the meet two spots out of the nationals field, but produced a season-best heave of 193' 1", which currently sits 10th in all of NCAA Division III.
The Wilmington College men’s track & field team scored five All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) performances on the final day of the 2023 OAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted at Kehres Stadium at the University of Mount Union on Friday.
Heys finished runner-up to John Carroll University’s Alex Phillip, the NCAA Division III record holder in the event, with a time of 30:59.21 in the 10,000-meter run.
Field events are slated to begin at 11 a.m. on both Thursday, May 4, and Friday, May 5. Track events start at 3:10 p.m. on day one and 3 p.m. on day two.
The West Lafayette native won the hammer throw and the Outdoor All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, and did so in style.
Heys finished third in the event with a time of 29:45.96. That time is currently 11th in NCAA Division III and is eight seconds short of his own school record.
The Wilmington High School alumnus won the high jump at the Centre Invitational on Saturday. Despite very windy conditions, Vilvens leaped 6' 8", which currently stands as the second-best mark in all of NCAA Division III.
