Simon Heys to Represent Men's Track & Field at Nationals

WILMINGTON, Ohio - For the second consecutive year, Simon Heys will represent the Wilmington College men's track & field team at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Wilmington High School alumnus will run in the 10,000-meter run at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

The Championships: Hosted by the University of Mount Union, the championships will be held at the SPIRE Institute located in Geneva, Ohio.

The Schedule: The three-day event is scheduled to run from May 26-28 with events beginning late morning each day. Heys' event, the 10,000-meter run, is slated for a 9:15 p.m. start on Thursday, May 26. 

The Coach: Ron Combs continues his 24th season as the head coach of Wilmington's men's and women's track and field teams. Combs has been named Coach of the Year, twice by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) and twice by the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), most recently this year. Heys marks the 90th national qualifier for Combs including the 56th outdoor national qualifier. 16 of those 56 qualifiers have earned All-American honors with the most recent being Pierce Burnam, now an assistant coach at WC, in the 400-meter hurdles in 2018.

Who to Watch: Simon Heys will be competing in the 10,000-meter run for the second consecutive outdoor nationals. The junior, who placed 13th at the event in 2021, is seeded fifth in the event with a time of 29:38.89, a school-record mark set at the Raleigh Relays on March 24, 2022. Wilmington's first All-American cross country runner in the NCAA era (1990-present), Heys will be looking to chase top-seeded Alex Phillip of John Carroll University.
