BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Wilmington College men's track and field team member Kalvin Butts competed in the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championship Meet hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday afternoon.

To be selected to compete in the national championship meet, an individual must be ranked within the top 15 (men) or 17 (women) of their event. Butts qualified for the meet in the weight throw with a toss of 18.33 meters (60' 1 3/4"). This distance seeded him fourteenth going into the national competition.

This was Butts' first competition on the national stage, but nerves didn't hold him back. He finished the competition ninth, five places ahead of his seed, with a toss of 18.28 meters (59' 11 3/4"). His ninth-place finish was just narrowly out of reach of All-American status (NCAA top-eight).

Look for Butts and the rest of the Fightin' Quaker track and field team as they open their outdoor season March 23 and 24 at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.
