Nine Fightin' Quakers place top-ten in indoor opener

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Wilmington College men's indoor track and field team opened the 2017-18 season at the non-scored Tiffin Alumni Open. Led by young talent, the Fightin' Quakers broke into the top-ten finishes in nine different events.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Aaron Koch (Goshen, OH/Goshen) earned the team's first top-ten finish of the meet, claiming fifth-place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.38. He was followed by freshman teammate Nicademus Hayward (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) who placed seventh with a time of 10.16.
  • In the 400-meters, sophomore Adam Knaub placed fifth with a time of 56.44. Koch immediately followed, earning sixth-place with a time of 56.46. Junior Elliot Phillimore (Old Fort, OH/Old Fort) crossed the finish line next to earn seventh-place with a time of 57.01.
  • Freshman Will Overholt (Fredericktown, OH/Fredericktown) earned the team's highest finish of the afternoon, placing second, overall, in the 800-meters with a time of 2.11.48. Junior Zach Simpkins (Germantown, OH/Valley View) ran in right after, with a time of 2:12.46 to place third. Freshman Josh Cyrus earned fifth-place in the same event with a time of 2:25.04.
  • Freshman AJ Hightower (Memphis, TN/Tipton-Rosemark) claimed sixth-place in the 200-meters with a time of 23.21.
  • Fifth-place in the 3000-meters was claimed by sophomore Cameron Phelps (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) with a time of 9:55.27. Freshman Ryan Honkomp (Morrow, OH/Little Miami) crossed the finish line two-seconds later with a time of 9:57.46 to earn seventh-place.
  • The Wilmington 4x400-meter relay earned tenth in the field, running in, in 3:40.90.
  • Hayward earned eighth-place in the high jump by clearing 5.35-meters.
  • In the shot put, freshman Joseph Holcomb (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) placed ninth with a put of 14.28-meters.
  • Senior Kalvin Butts (St. John's, MI/St. John's) earned eighth-place in the weight throw with a toss that went 16.91-meters.

  • The Fightin' Quakers take a break from competition until Saturday, January 13, when they travel to Marietta College for the Marietta Invitational.
