OAC Swimming Championships- Day Two Prelims- Men

AKRON- The Wilmington College men's swimming team competed in the day two preliminary heats of the OAC Swimming Championships Friday. The top sixteen times from the preliminary heats will swim in the evening finals. The top eight times will compete in the championship heat, while the bottom eight will compete in the consolation heat.

Friday morning consisted of six events: 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard backstroke. In finals, the 800-yard freestyle relay will also be contested.

The Fightin' Quakers competed in all events, except the 400-yard individual medley. Following the momentum built from yesterday's sessions, all of WC's swims this morning were season bests.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The quartet of sophomore Lawrence Daya (North Canton, OH/Glen Oak), freshman Freddie Snowden (Frisco, TX/Lone Star), and juniors Alex Tillapaugh (Wilmington, OH/Wickenburg) and Ben Ball (Gallipolis, OH/Gallia Academy) opened the meet with the 200-medley relay. Their time of 1:45.28 has the team seeded sixth for tonight's championship final.

  • The Fightin' Quakers will have two swimmers in the championship heat of the 100-yard butterfly this evening. Tillapaugh, who is seeded seventh with a time of 53.01 and senior Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) who is seeded eighth with a time of 53.24. Junior David Bellus (Upper Marlboro, MD/Northmont) will compete for WC in the consolation heat of the 100-yard butterfly. He's seeded sixteenth with a time of 54.72. Tonight's first alternate in the event is sophomore Andrew Haga (Gahanna, OH/Westerville South) with his time of 54.93.

  • Senior Brendan Tirado (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) slid into the championship heat of the 200-yard freestyle. Tirado is seeded seventh with a time of 1:46.34. Ball will swim in the consolation heat, seeded sixteenth, with a time of 2:00.64.

  • The Fightin' Quakers had two swimmers qualify for the consolation heat in the 100-yard breaststroke- Junior Cody Nash (Kingsburg, CA/Kingsburg) who is seeded 12th with a time of 1:01.51 and freshman Brody Morris (Leesburg, OH/Washington Senior), who is seeded 16th with his prelims time of 1:06.59. Fellow freshman Jared Shoemaker's (Springfield, OH/Shawnee) prelim time of 1:09.09 puts him as tonight's first alternate. Sophomore Jared Riffle (Gallipolis, OH/Gallia Academy) also competed in the 100-yard breaststroke; he finished 19th with a time of 1:12.18.

  • In the final individual event of the session, the Fightin' Quakers will have one swimmer in the championship heat, senior David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton). D. Spraul currently sits in eighth, with a time of 54.05. Ranked just behind him, at ninth with a time of 54.30-competing in tonight's consolation heat-is sophomore Andrew Stewart (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie). Joining Stewart in the consolation heat will be Daya, whose prelims swim put him 13th with a time of 57.29.

WHAT'S NEXT

  • Friday's finals are slated to begin at 6PM.

  • Saturday's prelims will begin at 10AM with finals starting at 5:45PM.
