WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's soccer team was defeated by No.7 John Carroll University to conclude its regular season on Saturday. The contest was the last game for seven Wilmington seniors, and a ceremony was held prior to kickoff.
The Fightin Quakers close out the 2019 season 10-7-2 overall and 3-5-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play. The Blue Streaks improve to 15-2-2, 8-0-1 OAC and claim the OAC regular season championship.
Mario Aboumitri had two chances to score in the first 20 minutes, one being shot slightly too far to the right and the other being collected by the Quaker goalkeeper. John Carroll stuck first in the 35th minute with Mikey Burrington sending a low rolling cross into the Quaker penalty area. The cross had a dummy shot from a Blue Streaks attacker before Jerrod McDowell took a relatively uncontested shot to score. The Blue Streaks found goal again in the 38th minute, Adam Haas sent a pass through the Quaker defense to Lawrence Cersosimo who scored on a light touch past Bradyn Riffle in his second start as goalkeeper for Wilmington. The Quakers were much more active on offense in the second half but were dominated in the air by the Blue Streaks.
It was a low-shooting evening in Williams Stadium with John Carroll taking the edge 8-6. The Quakers managed to even the mark in corner kicks at four with all of Wilmington's coming in the second half. Michael Owusu was the only Quaker to achieve more than one shot with two in the contest.
Riffle made two saves in his second loss for Wilmington while Connor Robinson took credit for the John Carroll win with five saves.
