WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's soccer team remained undefeated in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) competition with a 5-0 victory over Muskingum University on Wednesday evening.
The Fightin' Quakers record improves to 9-2-1, 2-0-0 OAC while the Fighting Muskies are now 7-4-1, 0-2-0 OAC.
Wilmington didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard as Zach Burgmeier earned a penalty kick in the third minute which resulted in a goal. It appeared that Ian Molfenter scored on a header in the eighth minute, but the goal was called back for an offside infraction. Molfenter would make his mark in the 14th minute when he intercepted a weak pass back to Muskies goalkeeper Damon Spaeth. He took a slight touch around Spaeth and had an open goal to shoot on. Molfenter scored again in the 29th minute when he pounced on a shot that was deflected by Spaeth for a close range score.
The Quakers were then held off of scoring for 45 minutes by a seemingly regrouped Muskingum defense, but Grant Murray finally broke the streak with a goal in the 74th minute. Burgmeier played a long cross to a perfectly executed run from Murray who just had Spaeth to beat for the score. Kevin Kamara scored the final goal in the 83rd minute.
The Quakers almost denied a shot from the Muskies with a final count of 14-1, Wilmington also held the advantage in corner kicks 6-2.
Felix Maurer recorded zero saves in his 4th solo shutout of the season. Spaeth made three saves in his loss.
The Quakers will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the University of Mount Union in a battle of United Soccer Coaches Great Lakes regionally ranked teams.
