Men's Soccer Heads to John Carroll for Regular Season Finale Saturday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's soccer team closes out its 2018 regular season with a trip to league-leading John Carroll University (JCU) on Saturday. Kickoff from University Heights is slated for 7 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and JCU. The Fightin' Quakers enter the contest with a 9-7-0 overall record and a 4-4-0 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play after falling to Capital University 3-1 on senior night on Wednesday. The Blue Streaks are 11-4-1 overall and 7-1-0 in the OAC after defeating Heidelberg University 1-0 on Wednesday.

The Coaches: Alex Van der Sluijs is in his first year leading Wilmington's men's soccer team. The 2007 alumnus, who was a three-time First Team All-OAC selection and a member of the program's only team to win an OAC title in 2004, worked at Defiance College for seven seasons. Hector Marinaro is in his 13th season heading the JCU men's soccer program.

The Players: Niklas Martensson has scored 16 of Wilmington's 35 goals as a team thus far this season. Benny Spirk sits second on the team in goals. Daniel Kappelin and Nati Wallis, who netted a hat trick in the win at BW last Saturday, have both scored three goals for Wilmington while Leon Tank and Ludwig Lantz have each scored twice. Seven Quakers have netted a single goal. In net, Felix Maurer has allowed 1.73 goals per game along with three shutouts. Chewy Gordon, the OAC's leading scorer, has netted 23 of Capital's 50 goals on the season. Brian Lutz and Jarrod McDowell have teamed up to score 11 goals and dish out 12 assists for the Blue Streaks offensively. Liam McIntosh allows just 0.81 goals per game in net.

OAC Tournament Implications: Wilmington gets into the six-team OAC Tournament with a tie or a win on Saturday. Additionally, the Quakers can qualify with a loss as well as Marietta College does not defeat Baldwin Wallace University.

Series History: Wilmington is 5-19-1 against John Carroll since the 1993 season. The Quakers last beat JCU on Nov. 7, 2004.  More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
